The Tulsa Debate League (“TDL”) is seeking Volunteer Assistant Coaches from the University of Tulsa to help classroom teachers at East Central High School teach and mentor high school students in policy debate. The Tulsa Debate League is a 501(c)(3) “urban debate league” whose mission is to engage and educate public school students in critical thinking through speech and debate. Volunteers commit to meet once a week and to attend Friday tournaments during the year.

Role and responsibilities

TDL needs Volunteer Assistant Coaches who can:

  • Judge practice debates once per week;
  • Provide feedback and encouragement to students;
  • Work one-on-one with students to understand difficult literature and concepts that arise during debates;
  • Attend tournaments with students and provide coaching before debate rounds.

Qualifications

TDL needs volunteers with debate experience. The high school program at East Central is a “policy” or “cross-examination” debate-style program, but most debaters are first or second-year debaters, so the Volunteer does not need training in policy debate specifically. TDL will provide training and support.
